Connections: Engage and Empower

During the 2017-2018 school year, Academic Affairs is partnering with members of the campus community and greater Winona to explore the ways we connect and how those connections drive innovation, service, and success.

Our first-year students launch the theme by reading and discussing a common text, Steven Johnson’s How We Got to Now, as part of the Welcome Week activities in August 2017. Then, throughout the year, watch for events that explore connections from a multitude of perspectives, as rich and varied as our campus community.

The breadth of the theme allows students to engage complex ideas, such as the meaning of community, the nature of the Saint Mary’s identity, and the role of individuals in collaboration. It also fosters cross-disciplinary exploration as we look at how science might influence art and poetry could impact policy. The theme is a starting point.

We can’t wait to see how your perspectives will deepen our campus’ understanding of what it means to connect.
