Connections: Arrivals and Departures
Academic Affairs partners with members of the campus community and greater Winona to explore ideas surrounding arrivals and departures.
Beginning with Welcome Week, explore how your arrival on campus, and the departures that accompany new beginnings, have the power to shape who you are and what you will become. Arrive at a better sense of place, purpose, and well-being through your First Year Experience.
Think through the distinctive arrivals and departures of the immigrant and refugee experience through this year’s common reading, Kao Kalia Yang’s memoir The Latehomecomer. Meet Yang when she is on campus Sept. 5 and consider how her experience with arrivals and departures might expand your understanding and illuminate your own arrivals and departures.
Through Food Week (Oct. 6-12), discover the arrivals and departures of seasonal food in the campus garden and through a variety of multi-disciplinary events across campus.
Apply the theme to your work in class as you consider the ways an introduction helps a reader arrive within a piece of writing, analyze how one arrives at a conclusion, and study what it takes to depart from an assumption.
Throughout the year, watch for theme events that will help you connect to one another, to Saint Mary’s, and to Winona.
